Guatemala's Pacaya Volcano Erupted on Friday, for the Second Time in Three Days.

Strong explosions were recorded at this volcano located about 50 kilometers south of Guatemala City, the national emergency authority, Conred, announced. Similar explosions were recorded on Wednesday.

The volcano, with an altitude of about 2,500 meters, expelled volcanic materials and a dense column of ash and gas to a height of 5,500 meters above sea level. Lava flows up to 1,500 meters long have been recorded on the southern flank of the Pacaya.

The cloud of granular and coarse ash was transported by wind to the western and southwestern communities and could reach over the region's capital, Escuintla, at a distance of about 30 kilometers.

Residents were advised to follow any evacuation orders from the authorities, not to endanger themselves, to prepare emergency luggage, to cover the water tanks, and to wear masks.

After the volcano recorded a high level of activity throughout the day, the civil protection authority said that it is not excluded to follow an intensification of the phenomenon, citing information from the volcanological institute Insivumeh.

Pacaya is one of the many volcanoes in the region. The 2018 eruptions of another nearby volcano, Fuego, have killed about 200 people.
