Walt Disney Co.'s latest animated film, "Raya and the Last Dragon," offers the audience a fresh approach to a fairy tale with princesses, set in a fantastic land inspired by Southeast Asia, but in which no prince appears to save the situation, informs Reuters.
The film, which will premiere on Friday, tells the story of Raya, a young princess played by Kelly Marie Tran, a well-known actress from the Star Wars franchise films, whom the hardships of the past make her careless. Raya goes in search of the last dragon, Sisu (played by the actress Awkwafina), to save humanity from a deadly plague.
"From the beginning, everyone had a completely different vision for this film than anything we think of when we think of the words' Disney princess, '' Tran said in an interview with Reuters.
The film will run in theaters and will also be available to customers of the Disney + streaming platform, for $ 30 in addition to the monthly subscription. The film focuses on the friendship between the central characters, rather than the classic love story from Disney princess stories. The action takes place in the fictional realm of Kumandra, where humans and dragons lived in harmony in ancient times. The only thing that can bring them back together is the fight against Druun, a virus-like enemy.
"Given last year's events, I really think this is the right film at the right time," said director Don Hall.
Critics spoke enthusiastically about the film's animation and story. The film received a 96% positive rating on the Rotten Tomatoes specialty platform. Awkwafina expressed hope that "Raya and the Last Dragon" will be followed by other films that bring to the fore an Asian-American cast.
"From the point of view of some Asian-American actors, we want to stand out more because the landscape has changed radically since we were children," she said.
