Denmark has decided to extend the AstraZeneca-Oxford serum vaccination by another three weeks. Although the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends the use of the vaccine, the Danish government has not exploded the link between the vaccine and blood clots.
"Today, we have decided today to extend the suspension for another three weeks," Søren Brostrøm, director of the Danish Health Authority, told a news conference.
Denmark was the first country to suspend the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in mid-March, a decision followed by several countries, mainly Europe.
"We have discussed this with internal experts, who still believe that concerns remain," Brostrøm continued, according to The Local.
The Nordic countries are in no hurry to resume vaccinations with AstraZeneca
The EU Medicines Regulator, EMA, announced last week that the vaccine is "safe and effective", that it is not linked to the risk of blood clots, but that it cannot "definitively rule out" its role in coagulation disorders.
Following this announcement, many European countries have resumed vaccinations with AstraZeneca, while the Nordic countries have maintained their decision to suspend, pending further checks.
Finland and Iceland resumed vaccinations this week, but only for seniors. Sweden is due to announce its decision on Thursday, and a decision is expected in Norway on Friday.
Denmark, a country of 5.8 million people, recorded a total of 227,894 cases of Covid-19 and 2,405 associated deaths.
